Merenrap,
or meren-rap,
is a style of hip hop
music which was formed
from the fusion of Dominican
merengue music with rapping.
The song credited with
giving birth to the genre
was "Soy Chiquito
(No Inventes Papito, No
Inventes)", recorded
by Santi Y Sus Duendes
and Lisa M in 1990. Other
artists include Proyecto
Uno, Tomando Mamajuana
(Live at jimmy's) by Mamajuana
and Enamorame
by Papi Sanchez
was a big hit.
Born in 1975 in Dominican
Republic, Papi Sanchez
so called “de la calle”
in Santo Domingo, has
conquered the hearts of
the world as he already
did initially with the
Dominicans and the Latino
community of the US.
His album Yeah Baby which
includes the super hit
“Enamorame” and
a little extra:
“Dejame Ser”
and his remake of
Dilemma, duet
originally sang by Kelly
Rowland and Nelly, was
an internatinal success.
The album, a mix of Merengue,
Hip-Hop, Reggaetton is
a musical pearl that has
been discovered!
For Papi Sanchez, whose
real name is Robert
Jose de Leon Sanchez,
the taste for music goes
back to his earliest childhood.
He discovered Hip-Hop
at the age of 14 and,
4 years later, he became
disk jockey in a local
radio.
He
was the director of the
radio KQ94. His contact
with the radio environment
allowed him to discover
the music in a more professional
and cosmopolite aspect.
Little by little, he set
up the group FDC of which
the single "Sube
el volumen" ("Raise
the sound" in English)
was a great and immediate
success. After a few collaborations
with famous artists such
as Cuco Valoy, Cristopher
Valoy, Adalgisa Pantaleon
(female singer of the
group 440 of Juan Luis
Guerra), Sexappeal, and
other artists of the rap
floor, Robert
Jose de Leon Sanchez
was ready to go solo.
In January 2003, he launched
himself as Papi
Sanchez and released
the album "Yeah
baby", a
condense of different
styles and of new compositions.
The single "Enamorame"
became a huge international
hit becoming number 1
in several European countries.
He was nominated at the
Casandra 2003 (equivalent
to the American awards
in Dominican Republic)
in the category "Revelation
of the year" given
to famous international
merengue artists.
In 2005, Papi
Sanchez returned
with the highly anticipated
"Welcome
To Paradise";
a motley crew of familiar
Latin beats laced with
a killer flow, edgy hooks
and impeccable style.
Welcome To The Paradise
also featured collaborations
with high profile artists
such as Shabakan and El
Jeffrey.
His experience as a DJ,
Producer, Writer and Rapper
continued to grow as his
artistic career climbed
to international success,
in 2006 he won the Gold
Album- Francia Gold Album-
Benelux Premios Casandra
2006. Papi Sanchez followed
that success in 2007 with
the released of "Made
In The Dominican Republic",
his third album.
In 2008, Papi
Sanchez is back
to remind everyone of
his Latin beats laced
with a killer flow, edgy
hooks and impeccable style
with "El
Rey De La Republica".
