Miss Venezuela is Miss Universe Again! Thursday August 27th, 2009 9:00am EST Miss Universe 2009, the 58th Miss Universe pageant was held at the Atlantis Paradise Island, in Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009. It was the first time an outgoing queen crowned her successor from the same country: Stefania Fernandez, Miss Venezuela, was crowned Miss Universe 2009 by outgoing titleholder Dayana Mendoza. 83 countries and territories competed for the title and the pageant was broadcasted live on NBC and Telemundo. The presentation show, rehearsals, dress rehearsal and the grand final took place at the Imperial Ballroom, in the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort. This marks the first time the Miss Universe live telecast was introduced by Donald Trump. 83 contestants pre-taped the national costume introduction include Turks & Caicos - Jewel Selver. Top 15 were announced, followed by Dayana Mendoza talked about her life as Miss Universe 2008. The Top 15 semifinalists completed in the swimsuit competition, when Top 10 finalists completed in the evening gown competition. The televised audiences could seen the judges' average combined scores. Before announced the finalists, there are two special awards - Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic were given. Dayana Mendoza reveals that the new Miss Universe crown is the “Peace” model. The Top 5 finalists completed in the though final question round. The 4 runner-ups announced first, followed by the new Miss Universe 2009 - Stefania Fernandez. The live telecast was hosted by Access Hollywood, Billy Bush and Celebrity Apprentice Claudia Jordan. For the first time, special guest - Heidi Montag performed during the Top 15 fashion shoot presentation. When Flo Rida performed during the Top 15 swimsuit competition, and David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland performed during the Top 10 evening gown competition. Stefania Fernandez Krupij (born September 4, 1990, in Merida, Venezuela) is a model. Fernandez is of Ukrainian, Polish, and Galician origin. Her hobbies include tennis and swimming. Her father Jose Luis Fernandez was born in Galicia, Spain but emigrated to Venezuela 45 years ago. Her mother is Nadia Krupij Holojad, whose Ukrainian father immigrated from the Soviet Union during the period of communist rule. Stefania's father was kidnapped in 2005 in the Venezuelan state of Barinas for five days. Fernandez won the Miss Venezuela 2008 title in a pageant held in Caracas on September 10, 2008. She was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela 2007 and Miss Universe 2008 Fernandez also won the "Miss Elegance", "Best Body" and "Best Face", titles. She became the second Miss Trujillo to win that title since the Miss Venezuela pageant first began in 1952. The first was Barbara Palacios, Miss Venezuela 1986 and Miss Universe 1986. Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza, also from Venezuela, crowned her as Miss Universe 2009 on August 23, 2009, in Nassau, Bahamas. This marks the first time in Miss Universe history the same country won the crown in consecutive years. Her prize package includes cash, a year contract promoting Miss Universe, world travel, a rent-free, prestigious New York City luxury apartment and a gift bag stuffed with designer shoes, dresses and beauty products, a US$100,000 stipend for a two-year course at the New York Film Academy and free access to famous fashion houses and beauty parlors. Fernandez intends to spend her year-long reign traveling the world to lecture on humanitarian issues and to promote education regarding HIV/AIDS.
